Excerpt
Studies on trace elements are of particular Importance at the present time since man-made alterations of the environment through the use of ferti- Llzers. food additives, food processing and canning and through industrial pollution of air and water may brlng about changes in the mineral balance and, as a consequence, in some biological functions. It is well established that several trace elements are of great importance in a number of biological processes; mostly through thew action as activators or ~nhib~toorfs enzymatic reactions, by competing with other elements and protelns For binding sttes, by influencing the permeability of cell membranes, or through other mechanisms. It is therefore reasonable to assume that these minerals would exert an action. either directly or indirectly, also on the cardiac cell, on the blood vessel walls, on the blnodpressure- regulating centres, or on other systems related to cardlovascular function (for instance, by derang~ng the lipid and carbohydrate metabolism).
